About Nitrogen (N₂)

Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and generally inert gas that makes up about 78% of Earth's atmosphere. It's the most abundant element in the air we breathe. As a diatomic molecule (N₂), nitrogen is relatively non-reactive at room temperature, making it valuable for creating inert atmospheres and preventing oxidation.

What is N₂?

Nitrogen (N₂) is a gas used in many applications including nitro cold brew coffee. Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and generally inert gas that makes up about 78% of Earth's atmosphere.

Safety Considerations

Important Safety Information

This is the primary danger with nitrogen. Because nitrogen is odorless and makes up most of the air we breathe, we have no way to detect when oxygen levels drop dangerously low. Breathing pure nitrogen or air with depleted oxygen causes unconsciousness within seconds and death within minutes—often without warning symptoms.

High-risk scenarios include confined spaces (tanks, vaults, storage areas), poorly ventilated rooms, liquid nitrogen evaporation in enclosed areas, nitrogen purging operations, and large-scale nitrogen use indoors.

Never enter confined spaces that have been purged with nitrogen without proper safety equipment and procedures. Install oxygen monitors in enclosed spaces where nitrogen is used.

Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold (-320°F) and can cause severe cold burns on contact. Proper protective equipment and handling procedures are essential.

Store in well-ventilated areas (essential for safety), keep cylinders upright and secured, separate full and empty cylinders, and consider oxygen monitors in storage areas.
